The Republic of Užupis is a district in Vilnius and it is a state within a state. It proclaimed its independence on 1 April 1997. Uzupis, has not only its own constitution, but a national anthem, a bishop, and four flags (one for each season of the year). It is quite small and isolated – about 148 acres (0.60 km2) in size. From the Old Town, Užupis is separated by a river, from here is its name which means “beyond the river”.

The Republic of Užupis

It is a place full of character and it can’t be different – it is the Republic of the artists. Užupis is compared to Montmartre and to Christiania in Copenhagen.

On the main square is located a statue of an angel blowing a trumpet. It was intended to symbolize the revival and artistic freedom of the district.

On the wall of Paupio street you will find the Constitution of Užupis. It has been translated into several languages, so maybe you will find it in your own.

The Užupis Republic

The Constitution of Užupis is far away from a usual one. Some articles from it:

  • People have the right to live by the River Vilnelė, while the River Vilnelė has the right to flow past people.
  • People have the right to have no rights
  • People have the right to be happy
  • People have the right to be unhappy
  • A cat is not obliged to love its master, but it must help him in difficult times.

The Republic of Užupis

The district also contains one of the oldest cemeteries in the city – the Bernardine Cemetery.

An interesting fact : Užupis has announced its entry into the European Union a year earlier than it did Lithuania.

I hope you enjoyed the post and while in Vilnius make sure to visit The Republic of Užupis. It is a great place to have a walk and have fun; to enter a different state without leaving Vilnius.
