Hello everyone,

Even if I’m not visiting the wineries anymore, I will continue to spam you about the good wines that we have and I will try to “force” you to come to Moldova. In the last day of the “Drumul Vinului” (Wine Road) project we visited Cricova. It is in the town with the same name, 15 km from Chisinau. As the roads are good and you don’t lose to much time on the way, you have no excuse not to visit it!

Cricova

The wine cellars of Cricova are actually a whole city. It is almost 100 metres under the ground. You can find here: crosswalks, traffic lights, cars, every street has its’ name (after the wine that is stored there). The tunnels exist since the 15th century. In that period the limestone was dug out in order to build Chisinau. The wine company “Cricova” was founded in 1952. The wine cellars of Cricova are the second largest ones in Moldova (120 km), after Milestii Mici (180km), which are the largest in the world. Be careful and don’t get lost in these labyrinths as it happened to Yuri Gagarin in 1966. They say that the first cosmonaut of the planet said “I found it easier to break away from the Earth, than to leave Cricova’s underground”.

Cricova is one of the very few wineries in the world that produce sparkling wines according to the classical French method, invented centuries ago by the monk Dom Pierre Perignon: “The Methode Champenoise”.

Cricova is proud of its wine collection. Which was created from the Moldovan wine collection and Goring’s collection of rare wines won by the USSR as war reparations after World War II. The “Grand Cellars of Cricova” house a remarkable collection of wines.

The most important piece of the collection is the “Jerusalem of Easter”1902 vintage (which is the oldest wine in the world and officially it is the last one).

This is the most expensive sparkling wine in the Cricova’s collection. Cricova Cristal is worth 1000 euro.
